Together with the Main Staircase and Gallery, these spaces comprise “The Mackintosh Suite,” which may be explored by guests.

The Glasgow Fossil Grove is the first geo-conservation museum in the world. In 1889, two years after the stumps and top roots of eleven fossil trees were unearthed in a quarry during road and landscaping development for the new Victoria park, it was created.

Sedimentary rocks from the Carboniferous Period, 325 Ma, include the unique tree fossils in which they grew. Lepidodendrons are an archaic vascular plant species. As a result of the trees’ remarkable preservation, scientists have determined the composition of the soil in which they grew, as well as the features of the Carboniferous forest habitat and the mechanisms responsible for their burial and preservation. This stratum of rock contains fossilised plant debris that was formerly part of the silt and mud soil. Approximately 4500 trees per square kilometre, the gap between them indicates that the forest was far less thick than contemporary coniferous forests.
